Gion Festival is one of the three major festivals in Japan. In addition to its scale, its history is quite long. It has a history of more than 1,000 years from AD 869 to the present. The Gion Matsuri is a month-long festival with various events, the most famous of which is the Yamahoko parade. But in the original Gion Festival, there was no Yamahoko, and the Mikoshi Togo (the mikoshi parade) was the focus of the entire festival. The timing of Yamahoko's appearance is no longer available.

In 1500 AD, the ministers of the shogunate at that time went to ask the old people about the past Gion Festival in order to hold the Gion Festival, which had been suspended for 33 years due to the Onin Rebellion. From the old people, I learned that before the Onin Rebellion, there were 32 mountain hokos in the former festival. , there are 28 after the festival. This is the only historical record of Yamahoko in the Gion Festival.
